The story largely unfolds during a whirlwind three weeks bookended by two major events in Lydia’s life: a long-delayed performance of Mahler’s Fifth Symphony and the launch of her memoir, a lavish coffee-table volume entitled Tár on Tár. As the film opens and her preparations begin, Lydia—wearing elegantly sober hand-tailored suits and a combed-back coif, with her competent assistant by her side—is the picture of an artist enjoying her hard-earned success, traveling by private jet between her home in Berlin, where she conducts a major orchestra, and New York for meetings with her publisher and the head of her mentorship program. But nothing in Field’s film—a biopic of a fictional person, a sapphic Blanchett movie without the steam, a #MeToo story without a clear moral—should be taken at face value.
After a 16-year break from directing, filmmaker Todd Field is back with his third feature and the year’s most talked-about film: the stunning and masterful Tár. Star Cate Blanchett, for whom the film was written, gives perhaps the best performance of her career as the world-famous conductor Lydia Tár. Yet she’s in good company, joined by a magnetic all-female ensemble that includes Portrait of a Lady on Fire star Noémie Merlant. Honing her quiet intensity to a fine point, the French actor plays Francesca, Lydia’s personal assistant and an aspiring conductor in her own right, who helps shape the psychological thriller’s destructive arc.
Where to begin? You can fall in love with the zany family again through the 1964 TV show, 1992 Hanna-Barbera cartoon, and recent animated movies, but we recommend starting with the iconic Oscar-nominated films. The first, The Addams Family, is light fun, but the sequel, Addams Family Values, is more polished and memorable, with playwright and New Yorker humorist Paul Rudnick serving as writer. (He also wrote the timeless Sister Act.) Still hungry for more? Discover the original single-panel comic strip series in The New Yorker to see where it all started.
