Since writing my first and only other diary at age 10—its humdrum still haunts me (“Spasta for dinner then shower and bed”)—I have considered the I’m not really a diary writer. . However, I find journaling surprisingly easy. Don’t get me wrong – it doesn’t sound like it reads like some great memoir. This content is not intended for anyone to read, never – not even me (I deliberately scribbled, scribbling with a dull pencil to keep my family from bothering to decipher it). I do it in bed before I go to bed, and often the whole stream of consciousness flows out as if I were conversing with a longtime friend suffering. To be honest, it’s completely petty, but that’s not the point. The thing is, to my surprise, it worked. For the first week, I slept six hours a night. It doesn’t sound like much, but to me it’s radical—not having a sleepless night in a week is a huge breakthrough. After a couple of weeks, my innings lasted to seven hours, then seven-and-a-half hours, and sometimes the legendary eight. I should add that it’s not completely bombproof, not quite, “She slept happily ever after”—six hours of sleep is still proof, but it’s not as often. Logs have been converted. The effect is the same as when taking happiness pills—I feel happier, less irritable, calmer, more resilient. What I’ve achieved now, Stoddart explains, is sleep at a lighter stage where emotional processing takes place—thus better mood. “When you’re sleep-deprived, your body prioritizes deep sleep over light sleep to protect your physical health,” she says. When you are overstimulated, “as soon as your sleep cycle shifts from deep sleep to lighter sleep, as it naturally happens many times a night,—ping! You’re awake.” But getting enough as well as deep sleep will allow for lower levels of arousal, she says, “while if you’re tired you’ll use the heightened state of euphoria to get you through the day, which will keeps you awake — the euphoria itself. -forever.”
But then a casual conversation a few months ago with sleep coach Camilla Stoddart changed everything. “Have you tried journaling?” she asked. I did not. I was always too shy, too unconvincing. For me, journaling belongs in the category of pillow-perfume and milky drinks of the gentle-smooth category, which is completely ineffective. Stoddart explains the science: “The amygdala is the anxiety center of the brain and is responsible for processing emotions—the amygdala judges whether something is worth panicking.” It was my stressed amygdala that woke me up, she said, “but journaling helps turn it off.” Stoddart has shown that, as a busy and anxious person, I tend to be in a state of overstimulation, which means that I am always on high alert, whether I am awake or not. Sleeping. “What you need to do is stop the stimulus before it wakes you up,” she says. By giving myself about 20 minutes a day to “productive anxiety,” where you write down all the things that are haunting your mind and allow yourself to worry about them, I reduce the load on my mind. mind, freeing the amygdala from worries that disrupt sleep. , and eased my high arousal. She adds: “By journaling, you are restraining your busy mind and preventing it from alerting you over and over again. Throughout your adult life, the way you deal with stress is to do it in the middle of the night – you have to free your brain. Just try it for a week.” There are no strict rules around journaling, Stoddart says: “There are as many ways to journal as there are many people—you don’t have to write down an overwhelming to-do list. . that will only make you feel worse. However, she has some suggestions: you can determine if you can actually act on anxiety: “ For example, you can’t do anything about the war in Ukraine—because So try to get that off your list of things going on in your head. “My diary can also be a place where I discover worst-case scenarios for problems I’m aware of, or where I find solutions — or at least, she says. steps towards them. Or I could write a list of things I’m grateful for, or I look forward to: “It might help to end on a positive note,” says Stoddart. “But even just reducing your anxiety helps.”
Without realizing it, I was trapped in a vicious cycle of demonic sleep for most of my adult life. Now, however, my journaling has put me on the right track — this is a frustrating moment indeed. It’s rare that we see celebrities looking really undone. With an entire team of glamor dedicated to helping them look polished and groomed, you’d be forgiven for thinking that they’re always looking to the next level. Just like us, they have their makeup-free moments, times when they just can’t be bothered to put in the effort, as Selena Gomez demonstrated on Wednesday. Posting a trio of photos of her, bare-faced and beautiful, the singer and founder of Rare Beauty gave us an insight into what she looked like in her downtime. Captioning the photos with ‘me’, she posed looking relaxed and content, with her cheeks propped up in her hands. A refreshing departure from most celebrity selfies, she has no makeup on in the photos—even a small pimple can be seen below her nose. Smashing the myth that celebrities are always flawless and the fact that she’s always perfect, she still looks gorgeous and resplendent.
