Charlotte Ritchie: [Laughs.] I can say that I’m a pretty inconsistent TV viewer and I always have to find the right show for my mind. When I first saw You, I thought I was looking for something to see that would make me feel good. I was like, “This guy is scary!” And that’s it. But, I knew I had to come back to it because a lot of my friends loved it and told me to watch it. I had a lot on my list at the time and I haven’t had a chance to go back to it.
Did you get a chance to watch the show again before auditioning? So I was approached to audition and at first I was a bit hesitant as I had just finished a really busy period of work and was in the process of filming another show. I was a bit overwhelmed. But I decided to audition and find time to go back and watch some episodes. I felt the tone of the show and I was impressed by how sharp, humorous the writing was and how layered the performances were. But I didn’t watch it all in one go – I actually just watched it for the first time last week. I don’t want to be so obsessed that I can’t be normal around Penn [laughs]. And also, I don’t want to know too much about this character, because Kate knows nothing about this guy, so it’s nice to be able to start fresh. I’m so glad I waited.
Kate is very different from Joe’s previous relationships. Now that you’ve watched the previous seasons, what makes her different to you? The most obvious one is that she is often unable to express her feelings. Her armor is unbelievably durable, and there are times when a better adjusted person can be uncomfortable, but for her, there is a numbing feeling there. It’s been hard for me because I’m quite expressive of my feelings, so I have to keep thinking, What am I holding back here? There are a few scenes where she’s a bit more open about why she’s the way she is, and I think her biggest fear is pushing her boundaries. You get the feeling that there might be something in her past that makes her wary of it. Having said that, she can have a good time—she likes to drink, she likes to hang out, she likes art, she likes sex. She just separates everything.
