I love that the writers focus on that, and the show is so self-conscious and always winks at the audience, but Kate doesn’t seem to like that. You will have a few moments when Kate is sarcastic or cynical, but not always. I think that’s important, because I think it’s very easy to lean in the other direction and overdo it [laughs]. Tell me about working with Penn. I read that there was a point on set when he turned to you and said, “Oh, you don’t look like your character!” What made him say that? I can’t remember, but it was probably something lame, like a fart joke. At the time, we were filming quite a distance away, but we didn’t spend that much time together—we did a few scenes and in all of them Kate told [Joe] that she How much I hate him. When Penn said that, I was like, “Um… thanks.” I’m very grateful [laughs]. It took some time to get used to each other. Also, at that stage, there’s nothing between those two characters — they’re just rivals so they don’t need to be particularly close or connected. For those scenes, the less we know about each other, the better. However, I got to know him better later on and it was great to watch him delve into the darkest parts of Joe. Joe is absolutely terrible and Penn is totally committed to it. You’ll want to make him much more likable, but he doesn’t always do that. You believe his anger.

I’m nervous, but also excited to know that so many people will, hopefully, watch it. The show’s fan base is strong and loyal, and I know they’ll say exactly how they feel, which is great. And in terms of memes, I think there’s only one gif of me right now—it’s from a TV show I did a long time ago called Siblings, Where I’m Drinking. I was really excited about that. It’s lame for me to describe my own gifs, but it’s proof that I have very little. So there will be multiple fingers crossing, though it’s also my worst nightmare to have loads of gifs. But now I’ve made the bed [laughs].
Kate is very different from Joe’s previous relationships. Now that you’ve watched the previous seasons, what makes her different to you? The most obvious one is that she is often unable to express her feelings. Her armor is unbelievably durable, and there are times when a better adjusted person can be uncomfortable, but for her, there is a numbing feeling there. It’s been hard for me because I’m quite expressive of my feelings, so I have to keep thinking, What am I holding back here? There are a few scenes where she’s a bit more open about why she’s the way she is, and I think her biggest fear is pushing her boundaries. You get the feeling that there might be something in her past that makes her wary of it. Having said that, she can have a good time—she likes to drink, she likes to hang out, she likes art, she likes sex. She just separates everything.
