After leaving the cinema, my first thought was how can I channel some Banshees energy in my own wardrobe. For one of the mustard or peat Donegal sweaters, I might try my luck at Margaret Howell. An old leather boot, perfect for trudging the swampy roads of a distant Celtic island? Maybe it’s time to try to track down the elusive Paul Harnden. Now that I’m in the market for some loose and cozy, unstructured à la Farrell linen shirts, I might head to Grailed to review Geoffrey B’s mini blazers. ; If I’m looking for a piece that more literally leans towards the British Isles’ craft tradition, there’s always John Alexander Skelton. (The search book for the most recent collection of this latter collection, filmed on the remote Scottish island of Orkney, has the word Banshees on it.)

Costume designer Eimer Ní Mhaoldomhnaigh’s work on the Banshees may have been more subtle overall, but it serves an equally important storytelling tool, albeit through Siobhan’s ever brighter colors. Kerry Condon as she begins to consider a life off the island or ominous things. the shadow of the cloak worn by the mysterious village elder, Mrs. McCormick. And then there are the sweaters – oh, those sweaters. I may have sighed or I might not have heard it clearly when Farrell first glided across the screen in a royal blue Donegal roll-neck sweater over a charcoal gray striped cardigan. I’d also cut off my own fingers if it meant I could slip gloves on Gleeson’s black coat fluttering in the chilly Atlantic winds. But of course, the real pièce de résistance is the ribbed red sweater with a Peter Pan collar style worn by Farrell in the middle of the film. By this point in the movie, I just want to drool. But there’s another reason I might not have noticed at first that Banshees is set in the 1920s: those damn sweaters. I may not be the first to observe the timeless allure of the ravishing sweaters worn throughout the film, whether Brendan Gleeson as the cranky folk musician Colm, or Colin Farrell as the hero Hibernian Pádraic, or Barry Keoghan as the misunderstood rogue Dominic. ; A quick Google search revealed that numerous menswear magazines, from GQ to Esquire, beat me at it. But I found myself especially annoyed when the Oscar nominations dropped last week and in the best costume design category, Banshees was nowhere to be seen. Photo: Jonathan Hession Perhaps it shouldn’t come as such a surprise: After all, the Oscars tend to reward a certain genre of film when it comes to costume design. Luxury in the period of luxury? Elvis and Babylon have that covered. Epic feats of fantasy world construction? Black Panther: Wakanda Forever and Everything Everywhere All at Once received well-deserved nods for that. And is there a movie that blindly recreates a moment in fashion history? Mrs. Harris to the hive in Paris—it’s time to get up.
