Set on the southernmost tip of Costa Rica’s Nicoya Peninsula, Santa Teresa has long been a beloved destination for surfers who travel here from around the world to ride the barreling beach break at Playa Hermosa. Though it has also received buzz as the second home of celebrities like Gisele Bündchen and Tom Brady, the diminutive beach road and its idyllic coastline have been attracting a new type of traveler of late, mainly digital nomads seeking a taste of freedom and immersion in nature. Though concern about the area’s growth is now a topic of conversation among locals and long-time ex-pats, there are conscious developments taking root such as Pasha, the first luxury estate in town. As a member of the Cayuga Collection, a sustainably minded group of hotels in Costa Rica, the property takes great care to protect its nearly 700 feet of pristine beachfront and nine acres of jungle canopy. After opening earlier this year, the four-bedroom house and sprinkling of private villas are now available on a private buyout basis, with the capacity to host about 20 guests.
When I wake up the following morning, I’m welcomed by a breakfast spread prepared by Pasha’s in-house team of chefs. I enjoy the last of my papaya-passionfruit smoothie before heading out with Douglas Morales, the owner and head guide of Manakin Tours. As we drive about 90 minutes east along a pebbled jungle road to the Cabo Blanco Nature Reserve, he tells me how his family was among a group of locals from the Nicoya Peninsula who were displaced when the reserve was first designated a protected area in 1963 after decades of deforestation due to farming. Understanding the need for the area’s conservation, Morales and his family now make it their mission to show others its rich biodiversity. Now on foot, I dodge the occasional puddle and slippery patch of mud while he tells me that the reserve was the first protected area in all of Costa Rica and it now serves as a vital corridor for species like ocelots, sloths, and capuchin monkeys. After our walk, Morales takes me to a local café in his hometown of Cabuya for fresh watermelon juice before we visit his mother, Nia Ledezma. While Morales leads tours, she spearheads their community’s conservation project, Cabuya Recicla, a campaign to remove waste from the town and its beaches that Pasha also supports through donations. On this day, she has about 20 trash bags of waste that have been collected and sorted, ready to be picked up by a local recycling center.
It’s only 5 p.m. in Santa Teresa but the sky is already turning a hazy shade of rose and lilac. At the edge of my private plunge pool in my villa suite at Pasha, a heron takes methodical steps along the concrete ledge, its reflection rippling through the water. Above me, in a tangle of tropical cenízaro and mango trees, a family of howler monkeys play and swing through the canopy. I close my book and place it on the teakwood table, unfurling myself from the hanging rattan chair I’ve made my home for the last few hours. I walk about ten paces down a pebbled path, careful to dodge the many hermit crabs along the way, until my feet touch sand. Ahead of me is Playa Hermosa, a wind-swept coastline where there appears to be nothing but tropical jungle for miles. The beach is virtually empty, save for a few evening surfers enjoying the last waves of the day and their beach-bound dogs awaiting their return.
